Economical slag removal

Slag is often an almost unavoidable by-product of flame cutting and plasma cutting of steels. In addition to the potential risk of injury, slag also prevents the seamless further processing of workpieces.

In the past, the removal of slag required a laborious, time-consuming manual process. Nowadays, we rely on advanced deburring machines to overcome this hurdle effortlessly. Our WEBER deburring machines embody innovation and efficiency. Thanks to sophisticated technologies, they are extremely low-wear and require minimal maintenance due to their robust design. This results in less downtime and lower operating costs for your company.

WEBER technology

Equipped with advanced technologies, our grinding deburring machines enable effortless and efficient removal of slag while being insensitive to dirt and wear. Thanks to their robust construction, they are also very durable and require minimal maintenance.

The slag hammer is an outstanding tool that has been specifically designed for the efficient removal of slag. Its mode of operation is based on the effective double rotation of the planetary gearbox, while at the same time the carbide pins hammer against the slag with targeted force. This symbiotic combination of double rotation and selective hammering enables the slag hammer to effortlessly eliminate even the most stubborn build-up.

However, the innovative character of the slag hammer goes even further: an ingenious mechanism ensures that the direction of rotation is reversed at regular intervals. This intelligent precaution aims to ensure even wear of the tools and maintain a constant impact force. By periodically changing direction, one-sided loading of the tool pins is avoided, which ensures the efficiency of slag removal and maximizes the service life of the tool.
This sophisticated technology not only guarantees an extended service life for the slag hammer, but also a continuously high performance over a long period of time.

After removing slag, the WEBER bolt grinding bar has been utilized by many companies worldwide for several decades as an additional lucrative processing step in our deburring machines. Its task is to uniformly remove the mill scale along the inner and outer contours of steel parts, thus creating an optimal basis for subsequent processing. This technology is characterized by consistently high grinding quality, high material throughput, and low operating costs due to long grinding abrasive lifetimes.

A beneficial feature for capturing coarse protection, such as slag residues and loose scale generated during processing in the machine and not captured by the suction, is our proven slag box at Weber. It enables a clean working environment by collecting coarse dirt generated outside the machine, is easily and safely transportable with a forklift, and allows for quick and uncomplicated emptying.

Why do we advocate for the use of a slag box? A clean work environment increases safety, enhances the well-being and health of all employees. The unintended spread of metallic deposits often leads to unnecessary wear on other existing machinery and inventory. Operational interruptions and machine damage can result, ultimately affecting productivity and profitability. Therefore, our slag box supports smoother workflow and promotes safety and cleanliness in production.

In the realm of grinding and deburring, reliability is paramount. When it comes to slag removal, a machine is needed that is not only robust and extremely user-friendly but also impervious to dirt. Our machines, with their top-notch quality "made in Germany," embody precisely these characteristics.

What does this mean in concrete terms? Thanks to their sturdy construction, they tackle even the most demanding tasks, such as processing ton-heavy metal parts, effortlessly and with minimal wear while maintaining consistent performance. Even airborne dirt and dust pose no problem for WEBER grinding machines, thanks to their enclosed processing systems and lifetime lubricated bearings.

Our metal grinding machines not only impress with their long lifespan but also with low maintenance requirements and trouble-free, efficient operation.

FAQ
Questions about slag removal

Slag is melted or burnt steel (iron oxide) that can occur along the cut edges of sheets due to insufficient pressure of the cutting oxygen jet during flame cutting or due to misadjustments, incorrect plasma power sources, specific material alloys, and other external influences of a plasma cutting system.

Deburring drum (tumbler), angle grinder, or simply knocking off by hand with a flat iron!

In the past, slag removal and deburring were laborious, time-consuming tasks in metalworking, with the results and quality of the parts often being person-dependent. The activity was accompanied by noise, dirt, and the constant danger of flying parts. For smaller workpieces, deburring drums (tumblers) were often used, which, through their rotational movement and the addition of gravel or other abrasive or impact bodies, removed the slag and burrs. However, uncontrollably rounded edges and limited reproducibility were the result, leading to complaints.

But with technological advancements, slag removal in the industry has also evolved. Nowadays, the metal industry increasingly relies on the use of continuous machines that efficiently and precisely remove slag. Equipped with integrated slag hammers, WEBER deburring machines quickly eliminate troublesome slag and burrs.

  • Risk of injury: Slag forms sharp edges or splinters, increasing the risk of injury for workers.
  • Further processing: Slag removal is crucial to make workpieces accessible for subsequent processing. For example, safe and precise clamping in lathes or milling machines.
  • Quality enhancement: Removing slag, burrs, and impurities improves the quality of the parts and is an important criterion for many companies when selecting their suppliers.
