Classic and deep learning-based inspection of flat workpieces
The inspection of flat workpieces plays a central role in modern industrial production. Traditional methods based on manual processes and conventional image processing are now being compared with more efficient deep learning-based technologies. This text explores the differences between these approaches, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages as well as their applications and challenges in today's manufacturing landscape.
Metal surface inspection
For the surface inspection of metallic workpieces, WEBER relies on targeted homogeneous lighting to capture a wide variety of surface defects and micrographs for large inspection areas.

Deep learning
based surface inspection
WEBER's industrial, image-based inspection systems enable the precise detection of surface defects in continuous conveyor operation, especially in inline inspection after the sanding process. These systems efficiently complement the WEBER sanding machine. With the latest high-resolution 2D camera technology, individual lighting concepts, proven classic image processing and advanced deep learning-based image processing algorithms, combined with many years of experience in the field of surface quality of ground workpieces, WEBER offers customized inspection systems that meet the specific requirements of customers

Classic and deep learning
based inspection of flat workpieces
Industrial image-based inspection systems from WEBER detect surface defects in continuous conveying operation (inline inspection) after the grinding process and thus complement the downstream process to the WEBER grinding machine. With high-resolution 2D camera technology, individual lighting concepts, classic image processing as well as deep learning-based image processing algorithms and years of experience in the surface quality of ground workpieces, WEBER offers appropriate inspection systems depending on customer requirements.
Height-based 3D inline inspection
The system enables image-based inspection using a sensor that projects a laser line onto the measurement object and uses it to create a profile for measurement and inspection tasks. With just a few clicks, you can easily correct angular errors, position deviations or vibrations and thus carry out a simple and error-tolerant inspection.
Thanks to the line-based recording of the workpiece, a high resolution can be achieved with little space requirement and numerous workpiece features, such as the rounding radius of the workpiece, can be determined.
Facts:
- High measurement speed of up to 16 kHz with 3200 profile data points
- Output of height and brightness of each point
- Intelligent image capture to avoid false reflections
- Stable on all surfaces thanks to high dynamic range and x-resolution from 2.5μm
- Wide range of measuring ranges available
- Integrated encoder interface
